“He’s standing in your way because I told him to.” The man says.

“Do I know you?” Otto asks.

The man looks around, laughing with the other men that are present. Turning his attention back to Otto, he continues to speak.

“If you don’t know who I am by now, you’ll find out soon enough.” He says.

Walking back over to me, he holds out his hand for me to take. Sliding my hand into his, I kindly accept it. Standing to my feet, he helps me down from the stage.

“Where do you think you’re taking my bitch?” Otto barks.

“Watch your fucking mouth!” The man barks, looking directly at Otto. “It’s rather filthy that a man of your…uhh…caliber to refer to your woman as your bitch. Didn’t your mother ever wash your mouth out with soap?”

The men with him snicker when Otto doesn’t answer right away. His nose flares with anger the more he continues his conversation with then man I am still holding hands with.

“Yo, who the fuck do you think you are speaking to me like that? Hmmm?” Otto asks. “I’m the one and only Otto Davis and if you really know me then you know they like to call me Red. There’s no need to read between the lines on that. I’m sure your mind works well enough to know what it is with me.”

“You’re serious right now?” One of the men with mr mysterious questions. “You really have no idea who you’re talking huh?

Otto scoffs, then uses his thumb to flick the tip of his nose. He looks at the security guard to his right and they both share a laugh amongst themselves.

“This guy.” Otto says, pointing at the man.

The security guard continues to laugh with him while the man I stand with continues to say nothing.

“You might want to kill that laugh you’re having.” The friend of mr mysterious says. “Haven’t you heard of the name Black before?”

The laugh quickly stops as silence covers the room. Otto’s eyes grow wide in surprise before the name has officially dropped from the man’s tongue. My eyes bounce between both men realizing there is some history between the two men that I wasn’t privy to.

Otto’s face hardens as his temple throbs. The mystery man doesn’t break a sweat, and I can’t decide if I’m the one in the wrong for being turned on by that.

“I’m hurt you don’t remember me.” He says. “It’s me. Jakolbi “Black” Willis. Was I really gone that long?”

“Black? Is that you?” He questions.

Black drops my hand, taking one step back. He extends his right foot in front of him while leaning back on the other. The he adjusts his body to do the same with the other foot. Next, he does a supermodel spin, throwing his hands up as if he’s calling Otto over for a hug.

“In the got damn flesh my boy. It’s wild you didn’t recognize me but it’s better late than never.” Black says.

“What are you doing here?” Otto asks. “I thought you caught 20 years with that last bid they just gave you.”

“You went wrong when you started thinking.” Black says. “They tried to stick me with 20 years, but my lawyer is the best in the city. Being as good as he is, he turned those 20 years into 5 with time served. I’ve only been gone two years and I’m back feeling better than ever.” The room is so silent you can hear a pin drop. Every man in the room has their ear tuned into to Black while he tells his story. “I served 3 years, eating all my time with a plastic spoon. Can’t no prison standing hold a muthafucka’ like me down.”

“Some lawyer.” Otto mumbles.

“Now that I’m home, I’m outside like I never left. Gotta get back to this money y’all left floating around out here.” Black says.

“We’ve never had any issues before you left, so let’s not start now.” Otto tries to reason. “Just leave my bitch where she’s standing, and things will be cool between us.”

Watching Black in this exchange with Otto is a sight to see. The man who seems so hard to shatter is seconds away from him crumbling.

“But we do have an issue.” Black replies.

Otto’s eyebrows dip in confusion as he tries to find the moment where he fucked up in this conversation.

“There isn’t one. Or am I just missing the joke? Otto asks with a small laugh.

“Your mom must’ve fucked a bitch cuz she must definitely raised a hoe.” Black laughs.

The men surrounding him all laugh after he speaks. The laughter is so contagious, it makes me giggle a little too. When Otto’s eyes flick to me, only pure rage exists there. I quickly cover my mouth, hiding my laughter, until all sounds including the smile it came with quickly disappears.

Black turns to me, giving my hand a reassuring squeeze as he does. He winks his eye at me and my smile slowly returns.

“What the fuck did you just say to me?” Otto shouts.

“Never stuttered a single word when I said it, therefore I’m unsure as to why you didn’t hear me clearly.” Black responds.

“I don’t beef with any of these young cats out here including you. I just want my bitch over here by me and for you to leave my club.” Otto says.

“Now see, there’s the problem. You keep referring to this woman a bitch, yet, the only bitch I see in this room is you.” Black replies.

Otto takes two slow steps back as his security stays in place. Black doesn’t seem fazed by the move whatsoever.

“Like I said before. That’s my bitch, not yours. I claimed her first and she’s only leaving this club with me.” Otto spits.

Snapping his fingers, Otto signals his security to remove the men standing before him, including Black. His surprised when it doesn’t work out in his favor.

One of the men standing to the right of Black, different from the one who spoke earlier, pulls his handgun from the waistband of his that was hidden underneath his shirt. Before either security guard has a chance to draw their weapons, the man fires his gun, putting a bullet into all four of their heads.

Otto watches each one fall one by one to his feet, unmoving. Bodies drop around him like flies, but he keeps his undivided attention on Black.

Gripping my hand harder than need be, Black pushes me behind him as he guides me through his men, towards the front door. He stops just shy of the exit, slipping off his shoes first, before moving on to his pants.

“What are you doing? I ask, confused by his actions.

“Undressing.”  He says casually.

“Why?” I question. “Now isn’t the time for that.”

As he continues to pull his pants off, he stands up straight handing them to me and waits for me to accept them.

“You’re not walking outside like that while you’re with me.” He answers. “Put these on and this hoodie too.”

Taking the joggers, I remove my heels then slide into his pants.  I watch as he removes his hoodie, passing it to me to put on.

Once finished, Black stands in front of me wearing a pair of black basketball shorts and a black t-shirt. He slips his shoes back on as I hold mine in my hands.

Otto tries to walk in our direction but one of the men with Black blocks his path. He pushes the man off of him and in return, the man punches him in the face. I gasp in disbelief at the sound log Otto’s nose crunching when it makes contacts with the man's fist.

Black looks over at me and smiles. He removes my hand from my mouth, lowering it to my side.

“I know you said something about me not leaving here with yo’ bitch as you call her, but like I said, I don’t see any bitches present in here besides you.” He says.

He’s looking at me, but his words are directed towards Otto.

“I’m looking right…” Otto begins.

He never gets to finish that sentence as he takes another blow to the face.

“Please don’t interrupt one while I’m speaking.” Black says. “That’s really rude and unlike your mother, mine actually taught me manners.”

I’d been fooling myself if I didn’t recognize how I’m enjoying this man. It makes me curious to know more about him. Any man that can bring Otto to his knees is the man for me.

“I don’t give a…” Otto barks just before being punched in the face again.

“Hopefully, the silence is just you learning not to interrupt me when I speak.” Black says. “So, if we have an understanding, please nod your head.”

Otto looks at the man who has hit him twice now before returning his eyes back to Black. He nods once and the message has been understood.

“Now that we’ve gotten that taken care of, I’m going to take my leave. This beautiful woman, miss Lola, is going to accompany me.” He says. “But first, I want you to apologize to her for calling her out of her name.”

Otto puffs out a deep breath, then wipes the blood leaking from his nose. He sniffs, pulls up his pants, then punches the man who struck him twice now. The other men all draw their weapons, pointing them towards Otto, as their friend lay on the ground trying to stand on his feet once more.

“No worries, guys. You can lower your weapons. We’re all good here.” Otto says.

His words fall on deaf ears as the men continue holding their weapons in the air. I watch in slow motion as Otto steps over the man on the floor while adjusting his red suit. When he walks over to where Black and I are standing, he takes his eyes off of Black, placing them on me.

There’s something in his eyes that alerts me to danger. I’ve seen this look too many times to not know what’s going to come next. Closing my eyes, and turning my head to the right, I brace for the feel of his wrath across my face.

“Per Mr. Black’s request, I owe you an apology.” He begins. Turning my head to face him, my mouth opens wide in shock after realizing the blow to my face hasn’t come. Slinking my arm into Black’s, I clasp my hand with his and he doesn’t complain. “With that in mind, I want to offer my most humble apologies for calling you out of your name.” He says.

“Thank you for that. You’ve never apologized to me for anything before, therefore, I greatly appreciate the attempt.” I tell him. “I’ll know if you truly mean that when you allow me to walk out of here tonight without anymore drama.”

Otto nods his head at me, then Black, before turning around. When he disappears down the dark hallway, Black takes my hand, leading me out of the building.

Outside the parking lot is empty since everyone has cleared out. Even though nobody was dumb enough to call the cops, I’m sure they may still show up anyway.

“Where do you want to go?” Black asks.

“Well, I left my phone and purse in the dressing room, and I have no idea what time it is.” I answer.

“My boys will grab your belongings and it’s after 2am.” Black says.

“Ummm…I…I…I don’t really have a place to go.” I admit. “What if I want to leave with you?”

“If you do then I can make that happen, but only if that’s what you want.” He answers.

“Yes. That’s what I want.” I tell him.

Leading me by the hand, we walk across the parking lot to a blacked-out box Chevy. He opens the passenger door for me and I slide into the leather seat. Black closes the door and walks to the driver’s side, sliding in.

“Let’s ride.” He says starting the ignition.

The only thing I can think about clearly, is what have I gotten myself into.
